The acorn is one of the most important foods in the blue jay’s diet. Unwittingly blue jays store (cache) many of the acorns they gather in spots that are sometimes located a few miles away. That being the case, more acorns can be stored in less time if jays could carry several acorns at a time.
A few years ago while refurbishing our curbside berm we accidentally uncovered a huge stash of acorns under the canopy of out neighbors oaks which drop acorns all over our yard and new driveway. We love our wild neighbors but wish they wouldn’t displace our chosen garden plants.
Thanks for your comments. You many have uncovered a stash of acorns created by a chipmunk. They are known for making stashes composed of many nuts. When I was working for the GA DNR we found that the below ground controls for our irrigation system were full of acorns.
