BACKYARD SECRET – DOGWOOD TREES ADVERTISE THEIR BERRIES

Many biologists suggest that part of the reason that flowering dogwood berries are so popular with migratory birds is dogwood trees advertise their bounty of berries.  The theory is this that when migratory birds are en route to their winter homes, they are looking for a source of quick energy. The bright red fall foliage of the flowering dogwood stands out among the countless trees in a forested landscape.  Upon seeing the tree’s red foliage, migratory birds pay a visit to the trees and find it is full of nourishing red berries.  Once the migrants find the bounty of red berries and quickly eat their share before moving on to their next stopover site.  In exchange for providing food for the birds, the dogwood benefits by the birds scattering the seeds across the landscape in their droppings.
