MOURNING DOVES ARE BIG EATERS

Over the years, I have met some big eaters.  For example, I know a fellow that ate six-foot long hotdogs in less than 15 minutes.  However, this fete does not compare with how much a mourning dove can consume.

A biologist that obviously that was blessed with a lot of patience counted all of the grass seeds found in a mourning doves’ stomach.  Remarkably, the final tally was 17,200.  Wow!  I am impressed.

  1. Interesting. What seeds do they really love? I love mourning doves. I had a neighbor one time who said he did not like them because they were stupid. How rude and mean!

    • When I was banding mourning doves we trapped them using wheat. However, supposedly around feeds they are are most fond of hulled sunflower seeds, mixed seed. cracked corn, canary seed, and black oil sunflower seeds. In my yards they are most fond of white millet. There are a number of seeds they will also eat such as peanut hearts and popped corn.

      I hope this helps.
