Another reason is that rufous hummingbirds begin arriving in Georgia as early as August. As such, if we have a feeder stocked with fresh food, one might decide to take up residence here this winter. The rufous hummingbird is the hummingbird that most commonly winters in Georgia.
Certainly good information, Terry. We had our first banded winter bird over 30 years ago. We’ve had several others banded in the winter in other years.
We’ve also seen increasing numbers of Baltimore orioles in the last few years.
Good post! We have also hosted overwintering Anna’s hummingbirds – one in Decatur and one at Lake Oconee. They stayed til March. Both were banded by the Ga Hummingbird Society (find them on Facebook). Watching the banding was fascinating. And we loved giving a little food to keep the birds going.
