It was obvious that it would be impossible to net the bird with a short-handled net. My only chance to net it was to tape my butterfly net to the end of a curtain rod. Although a net taped to the curtain rod would allow me to reach the bird flying near the ceiling, the laundromat was so large it would prove next to impossible for me to get close enough to capture the bird in a net. My best hope of saving the hapless prisoner was to coax it down low enough where it could directly fly out of a door.
Wow! That was an exciting story, Terry. It is good that you listed methods to rescue trapped birds and then feeding them completed a very informative article.
Thanks William.
Over the years lots of folks have told me that have faced having to try to save a hummingfbird. i hope the info helps.

Wow! Thank you for sharing the story of the rescue. Your determination paid off! Doesn’t it give you a wonderful feeling to know that you have helped to save one of Nature’s jewels?
Once, when we had a covered deck with skylights, a humming bird flew in, and was trying to fly out through the skylights. I opened both doors going to the outside, and turned off the lights. I went upstairs to the bathroom that overlooked the deck and climbed out onto the roof of the deck, taking enough quilts and blankets to cover the skylights. I could see the hummingbird still trying to fly out through the skylights. I covered the skylights. The hummingbird was gone by the time I got back down stairs.
Occasionally, when the garage door is left open, a hummingbird or a Carolina wren will fly inside. Having two doors side by side in the garage, and windows on one side, we open the windows, close the door farthest away, and turn off the lights. So far, the bird will seek the lighted side and find its way out.
Another nice job saving a wild creature! I always try to save a bee or other good insect when it becomes trapped in our rooms.
Elizabeth,
You are right, it did leave me with a warm glow. Thanks for your stories, I have never run into a problem with sky lights; now I know what to do if I have to face one.
Terry
We do too. In fact, my daughter and granddaughter do likewise. It is just the right thing to do. After corresponding with you over the years, I am not surprised that you feel that way. You are a good person.
